Dokic eases through to second round

Monday 11 January 2010 Comments

Jelena Dokic is through to the second round of the Moorilla Hobart International, winning in straight sets today.

Playing Elena Baltacha, the current British No.1, Dokic struggled in the first set dropping her serve early before regaining her composure to take the set.

In tough conditions on Centre Court Dokic took control of the second set, racing to 3-0 lead and securing the match in just over one hour, 6-4 6-2.

“It didn’t bother me that it was so hot, just the conditions are really different to what we’ve had the last few weeks. We’ve had very heavy and hot conditions and the balls were flying a bit today so it took some time to get used to,” Dokic said after her match.

“Every match that you win is great, she’s (top) 80 in the world and to win quite comfortably, I didn’t even play close to my best tennis, is a good sign, but I’m going to have to lift my game up this week pretty soon, and obviously the Australian Open and the rest of the year.“

Dokic will now play No.2 seed Shahar Peer (who was too strong for Victorian Olivia Rogowska, winning 6-3 6-2.

Fellow Australian Sophie Ferguson was unable to get on top of her opponent, qualifier Kirsten Flipkens, also going down in straight sets 6-2 6-2.

All eight seeds are now through to the second round with the final four all winning their matches today.

Fifth seed Carla Suarez Navarro recorded a comfortable win over Yaroslava Shvedova, 6-1 6-2;  seventh seed Jie Zheng overcame Kaia Kanepi in three tough sets, 4-6 6-3 7-6(4) and No.8 seed Gisela Dulko defeated Melinda Czink 6-4 6-2, with Peer the last seed through.

Congratulations to Jelena for this splendid victory. I think it`s a great idea that she plays doubles with Molik. Good luck for the match she will play Peer!. I agree "every match that you win is great". And I'd say that a victory is great but two will be greater.
