Anabel Medina Garrigues had her third top 30 season in the last four years. As top seed she won her ninth tour singles title at Fès. She was also a finalist at Seoul and a semifinalist at Marbella. She had a successful start to the 2009 season, reaching the fourth round of the Australian Open, where she lost to surprise packet Carla Suarez Navarro. She made her top 20 debut on 9 February and reached a career high ranking of 16 on 4 May, however unable to stay in the top 20, dropping to 28 at the end of the season. Garrigues also teamed up with compatriot Virginia Ruano Pascual to claim her second Grand Slam doubles title at Roland Garros. Hard courts are her favourite surface and watch out for her backhand down the line.
