Carla Suarez Navarro came to the attention of the Australian public after saving match point to defeat No.6 seed Venus Williams at the Australian Open in the second round and then defeat No.21 seed Anabel Medina Garrigues, falling to No.4 seed Elena Dementieva in the quarterfinals. The win against Venus was her first win against a top 10 player. Navarro record her second straight top 50 ranking, highlighted by her finalist appearance at Marbella and the semifinals in her hometown, Barcelona. She reached the second round of the Moorilla Hobart International last year, defeating No.3 seed Anna Chakvetadze en route. Her single-handed backhand shot is one to look out for. Only 162 cm, Navarro makes up for her height disadvantage with her stern determination and belief. |
