Melanie Oudin captured the attention of the tennis world when she knocked out an array of seeded players at both Wimbledon and the US Open this year. After winning through qualifying at Wimbledon, Oudin reached the fourth round of the Grand Slam defeating No.29 seed Sybille Bammer, Yaroslava Shvedova and former world No.1 Jelena Jankovic en route. She then continued her winning ways at her home Grand Slam – the US Open – where she defeated Anastasia Pavlychenkova, No.4 seed Elena Dementieva, Maria Sharapova and No.13 seed Nadia Petrova, before succumbing to No.9 seed Caroline Wozniacki in the quarterfinals. Oudin had a breakthrough season in 2009, highlighted by her first top 50 finish.
