Defending champion, Petra Kvitova is back again this year and will be striving to claim her title defence. The Moorilla Hobart International 2009 title was her first WTA Tour singles title and she made her top 40 debut shortly afterwards on 19 January. Unfortunately she was unable to take her form to the Australian Open falling in the first round to No.33 seed Victoria Azarenka. Kvitova reached the fourth round at the US Open defeating Alisa Kleybanova and top seed Dinara Safina, notching up her second win against a top 10 player and her first over a reigning world No.1. The later part of the season saw her be a finalist at Linz, defeating another top 10 player – Agnieszka Radwanska. Kvitova is a strong baseliner whose favourite shots are her serve and forehand.
