Groth progresses to quarterfinals

Australian star Jarmila Groth has become the first player to progress to the quarterfinals of the Moorilla Hobart International.

After winning the first set against qualifier Tamira Paszek (AUT), the No.6 seed was challenged in the second set before claiming victory, 6-4 7-6(5) in 1 hour and 42 minutes.

“I thought I played pretty well…I had to work very hard to win points and she [Paszek] was a very good player,” Groth said.

“I knew it wasn’t going to be easy, especially at night…so if you don’t start very well it can take a little longer to warm up, but I thought I finished it pretty well in the end.

“I was trying to concentrate on my game…and keep my errors to a minimum. She made me work very hard so it’s really good to be through.

“Now I can rest, sleep and play some more games [in the tournament].”

The contest between Groth and Paszek was the only singles match to be completed on day three following several rain delays at the Domain Tennis Centre.
