Ninth seed Mona Barthel has been forced to withdraw from the tournament with a back injury.
Barthel injured her back during her round two victory over Japanese qualifer Naomi Osaka yesterday. She informed tournament director Mark Handley this afternoon that she had not recovered to play tonight’s scheduled quarterfinal against French seventh seed Alize Cornet.
Cornet now advances to tomorrow’s semifinals.
