Strong line-up for 2010

3 December 2009, by Hobart International Tennis

The 2010 Moorilla Hobart International will boast one of the most competitive fields in the event’s history.

Anabel Medina Garrigues is the top seed for the tournament and will be joined by fellow Spaniard Carla Suarez Navarro, Israel’s Shahar Peer and the Bondarenko sisters Kateryna and Alona.

Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak, 2005 champion Jie Zheng and Gisela Dulko round out the seeded players for the event, which boasts 17 of the world’s top 50 women.

Moorilla Hobart International Tournament Director Michael Roberts is excited about the potential match ups that fans will be able to watch in January.

“Our event has the world’s lowest player cut-off for an international level tournament meaning it is still the hardest tournament to be accepted into for its level on the Sony Ericsson WTA Tour.”

“The 2010 field has a good mix of returning crowd favourites and new faces and boasts one of the most even fields I’ve seen in my seven years.”

Melinda Czink, two times runner-up Iveta Benesova, Lucie Safarova, Magdalena Rybarikova, Sorana Cirstea, Shuai Peng, Sara Errani, Melanie Oudin and Alize Cornet round out the remaining top 50 women.

The Australian contingent will be led by Jelena Dokic and wildcard recipient Alicia Molik with two wildcards still to be awarded by Tennis Australia.

“The draw will provide a fantastic opportunity for Aussies like Jelena and Alicia to have a real chance at taking out the title,” Roberts said.

“With the two remaining wildcards we hope to boost the quality of the field ever further.”
