Knapp powers past Dellacqua as Diyas impresses against Hantuchova

15 January 2015, by Hobart International Tennis

Karin Knapp produced the biggest upset of the Hobart International 2015, beating top seed Casey Dellacqua 7-5 2-6 6-3 in the second round to set up a quarter-final showdown with US qualifier Madison Brengle.

The Italian stayed with Dellacqua before edging the opener as Dellacqua flinched while serving to stay in the set, and rallied after losing seven of the next nine games with two breaks in the final set.

The Australian saved one match point on serve at 5-2 but could not stop Knapp from serving out the match after two hours, eight minutes.

Knapp will return to court in Thursday’s night session to face Brengle for a place in the semi-finals after the world No.84 beat fellow qualifier Kateryna Kozlova 6-1 7-6(8).

With all three courts in use at the Domain Tennis Centre, No.2 seed Zarina Diyas set up a quarter-final tie with Alison Riske with an impressive 7-5 6-1 over former world No.5 Daniela Hantuchova.

Riske, the No.8 seed, scored a career-first win over Serbia’s Bojana Jovanovski 6-2 4-6 6-1.

The day’s other quarter-final will feature Kurumi Nara of Japan and Italy’s Camila Giorgi, who advanced when Kaia Kanepi withdrew from their second-round match with illness.
