Moore reaches second round of qualifying

Jessica Moore has progressed to the second round of qualifying after defeating Olivia Sanchez (FRA) in a tough three-set match at the Moorilla Hobart International today.

After winning the first set, Moore lost the second set in a tiebreak but regained her composure to win the final set, 6-4 6-7(5) 6-2.

“It was a tough match but I felt like I played really well at the beginning,” Moore said.

“She [Sanchez] stepped it up a little bit and I felt that I was starting to get tired – the heat was pretty intense and then this breeze came through and cooled me down a little bit.”

Australia’s No.9 ranked female tennis player will play the winner of Xinyun Han (CHN) and Simona Halep (ROU) in the second round of qualifying tomorrow. Moore lost to Han in the first qualifying round of last year’s Australian Open.

“I’m definitely going to go out there and try and win,” Moore said.

“I will watch a bit of their [Han and Halep] game and I’m pretty confident for tomorrow. I’m working pretty hard physically and on the court.”

Moore will be hoping to join fellow Australians Jarmila Groth, former world No.8 Alicia Molik, Commonwealth Games gold medallist Sally Peers and Australian Open Play-off winner Olivia Rogowska in the main draw.

Earlier today, Optus 18s Australian Championships winner Isabella Holland was defeated by Mandy Minella (LUX) in the opening match on Centre Court.
