Preview: Day 4

11 January 2012, by Hobart International Tennis

Day 4 action at the Moorilla Hobart International today. We preview the centre court action and look at the crystal ball to predict a winner.

Sacha Jones (AUS) v [6] Shahar Peer (ISR)

Another day, another big challenge for the Kiwi turned Aussie. After getting through qualifying, Jones beat a Lucky Loser in the first round and will be looking to continue that form against the number six seed. It will be a tough ask though as Peer was convincing in her opening round match. Peer is looking to get back to the cusp of the top 10 again and has the game to do it – solid from the back of the court, not afraid to come to net, she deserves to be favourite in this match.

VERDICT: Peer in straight sets.

Mona Barthel (GER) v [2] Anabel Medina-Garrigues (ESP)

Another qualifier through to round two, having won through over fellow qualifyer Romina Oprandi in straight sets. The number two seed will be hard to beat, following three matches at the Hopman Cup and a tough first round match against fellow countrywoman Carla Suarez-Navarro. More known as a claycourt, the Spaniard with the abbreviated service action should have enough weapons to outlast her German opponent.

VERDICT: Medina-Garrigues in three sets.

[5] Jarmila Gajdosova (AUS) v Anastasia Rodionova (AUS)

The pair have played twice before with Gajdosova winning both encounters. Jarka showed some of her best form in the win over Ayumi Morita in straight sets and could challenge for the title again. Rodionova was impressive against veteran Greta Arn. These players know each other’s game well but Gajdosova should have the edge in this all Aussie enounter.

VERDICT: Gajdosova in straight sets.
